valleyhttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/PERCENTAGE-PREVALENCE-OF-EIMERIAN-SPECIES-IN-AWASSI-SHEEP-IN-NORTHERN-OF-PALESTINEPublished Articles This study investigated the incidence of toxoplasmosis in sheep flocks in Palestine through testing Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in sheep at three locations at the northern West Bank and two cities in Jordan valley of the Palestinian Territories A total of 2479 blood samples were collected and the plasma was tested using indirect ELISA Results showed that the infected sheep were 205 of total samples The infection was highest in Jenin 302 followed by Nablus 24 Tulkarm 186 Jericho 155 then Tubas with lowest infection rate at 09 There was a significant P 005 difference in the rate of infection between all site compared to Tubas At the sheep farm level Jenin was of highest infection rate 913 followed by Tulkarm 889 Nablus 842 Jericho 73 and Tubas 91 These findings indicated that sheep products milk meat might be at risk of contamination with the T gondii which had a potential health problem to consumers of sheep origin productsSeroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in Goats in Two Districts in Northern Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Prevalence-of-the-Red-Mite-Dermanyssus-gallinae-in-Layer-Flocks-in-four-Districts-in-NorthernWest-Bank-PalestinePublished Articles The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of anti-T gondii in goats raised on farms in the Jenin and Tulkarm districts in the north of Palestine The investigation was conducted on 14 herds comprising of 280 goats Blood samples were collected via the jugular veins of 151 goats during the period from January to December 2011 The indirect ELISA test was used for the detection of anti-T gondii antibodies Results showed that an anti-Tgondii IgG antibody was detected in 134 of the samples The presence of the anti-T gondii antibody was influenced by the location of the goat herds The highest incidence was in Jenin district 1744 while it was 769 in Tulkarm district These results indicated the possible contamination of meat and milk of the goats with this parasite which in turn negatively affects human health Prevalence of the red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) in layer flocks in four districts in northern West Bank, Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Prevalence-of-the-red-mite-Dermanyssus-gallinae-in-layer-flocks-in-four-districts-in-northern-West-Bank-Palestine-1Published ArticlesAn experiment was conducted to investigate the prevalence of the red mite Dermanyssus gallinae in layer farms in four districts of northern West Bank Palestine The four districts were: Nablus Tulkarm Tubas and Jenin A total of 225 layer farms were investigated for infection with the parasite during the period from September 2009 to August 2010 The highest prevalence of the red mite was observed in the district of Tulkarm 183 255 327 and 473 for the districts of Nablus Jenin Tubas and Tulkarm respec-tively which can be explained by the hot humid climate in the district and insufficient cleaning Infection with the red mite was highest in sum-mer 438 and lowest in winter 12 The high infection rates observed in this study reflect the poor management and housing conditions char- acteristic of layer farms in the study regionPrevalence and Diversity of Gastrointestinal Parasites in small Ruminants Under Two Different Rearing Systems in Jenin District of Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Prevalence-and-Diversity-of-Gastrointestinal-Parasites-in-smallPublished ArticlesThis study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites GIP in goats and sheep kept under extensive and intensive management systems in the district of Jenin Palestine during the period from January to December 2010 Factors affecting diversity distribution and intensity of infection by GIP were investigated Data about farm history and breeding management were collected by means of a questionnaire A total of 810 faecal samples from small ruminants composed of 285 and 525 samples from intensive and extensive rearing systems respectively were collected from eight villages Yamoun Bet qad Merkah Talfeet Kfaret Tarem Jab`a and Aneen A total of thirteen genera of the GIPs included eleven nematodes one cestode Moniezia and one protozoan Eimeria were recovered The results showed fewer diversity of GIP in intensive rearing system The prevalence of GIPs in animals reared under extensive system 265 was significantly higher P001 than those reared under intensive system 79 The prevalence values of GIPs differed significantly P001 between some villages The highest prevalence of infection 308 was in Tarem with a proportion of 211 and the lowest 77 in Betqad with a proportion of 53 The dominant parasite was Eimeria spp 811 prevalence and 342 proportion of total parasites in the area This was followed by Dictyocaulus spp 491 prevalence 207 proportion and Haemonchus spp 231 prevalence and 97 proportion Results showed that animals kept under intensive grazing system had lower prevalence of GIP with low diversity Eimeria spp Dictyocaulus spp Trichostrongylus spp Neoscaris spp and Ascaris spp than animals kept under extensive grazing system Eimeria spp Dictyocaulus spp Haemonchus spp Moniezia spp Trichostrongylus spp Strongylus spp Neoscaris spp Nematodirus spp Strongyloides spp Ascaris spp Cooperia spp Chabertia spp and Trichuris spp The occurrence of parasites with zoonotic significance Eimeria spp Dictyocaulus spp and Haemonchus spp is discussedPrevalence of Toxocara canis in Dogs, North West Bank of Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Prevalence-of-Toxocara-canis-in-Dogs-North-West-Bank-of-PalestinePublished Articles This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of Toxocara canis in local districts in North West Bank of Palestine Fecal samples from 132 dogs were collected in Nablus Tulkarm and Jenin cities from September 2008 to April 2009 and examined for T canis eggs with the floating technique The overall infection rate of toxocariasis in dogs was 364 The dogs less than 6 months old showed higher infection rates than those older than 12 months P = 004 Vigorous interventions are necessary such as routine coprological examinations of dogs and prescription of anthelmintics to infected dogsSeasonal Prevalence of Oestrus Ovis in Awassi Sheep of North of West Bank (Palestine).http://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Seasonal-prevalence-of-Oestrus-ovis-in-Awassi-Sheep-of-north-of-West-Published ArticlesAbstract: This study was done to investigate the prevalence of Oestrus ovis of Awassi sheep herds in the northern region of West Bank Palestine A slaughterhouse survey was performed from March 2006 to February 2007; a total of 335 Awassi heads were examined Oestrus ovis were found in 181 sheep out of 335 53 The highest rates P05 of infection were in the months of June July August and October 77 80 82 and 73 for these months respectively The mean percent of larvae L in infected sheep heads was 46 with L1 30 with L2 and 23 with L3 OOvis infestation is wide spread in the studied area Measures must be applied continuously in order to decrease the incidence of the infestation on local herdsPrevalence of Microorganisms Associated With Intramammary Infection in Cows and Small Ruminants in The North of Palestine.http://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/PREVALENCE-OF-MICROORGANISMS-ASSOCIATED-WITH-INTRAMAMMARY-INFECTION-IN-COWS-AND-SMALL-RUMINANTS-IN-THE-NORTH-OF-PALESTINEPublished ArticlesThis study was undertaken to determine aetiology and prevalence of subclinical mastitis in manually and mechanically milked animals in the north of Palestine Milk samples from animals with bacterial infection of the mammary gland showed significantly higher somatic cell count SCC than did the corresponding milk from healthy animals which 1420100 X103 cellsml; vs 33035 X103 cellsml; 1650155 X103 cellsml vs 49040 X103 cellsml; 52050 X103 cellsml vs 14025 X103 cellsml for ewes goats and cows respectively The prevalence of bacterial isolation of the milk from goats n = 25 sheep n = 40 and cows =220 from several major herds was determined Culturing for bacteria revealed that 52 725 and 591 of tested goats sheep and cows had subclinical mastitisPrevalence of Infectious Bursal Disease in Broilerhttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Prevalence-of-Infectious-Bursal-Disease-in-BroilerPublished ArticlesThe present research was conducted to investigate the prevalence incidence of the infectious bursal disease in the broiler farms in the north of the West Bank Palestine The research focused on this area as the hosts the majority of broiler raised in Palestine Data and information were collected directly from farms For diagnosis all dead birds were examined through dissection and through examining the clinical signs in birds The results showed that the prevalence of the disease was higher P005 in winter 145 followed by spring 112 autumn 75 then summer 63 Similar findings were observed in mortalities which was the highest P 005 Recommendations based on our finding were given by the studyResponse of Broiler Chicks to a High Olive Pulp Diet Supplemented with Two Antibioticshttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Response-of-Broiler-Chicks-to-a-High-Olive-Pulp-Diet-Supplemented-with-Two-AntibioticsPublished Articles A total of 210 twenty two- day-old broiler chicks were used in this programme to investigale the performance [ca\ intake digestibility and visceral organ mass of broiler chicks fed with high level of olive pulpsupplemented with two antibiotics: streptomycin and tylosin The two antibiotics were added to supply 150 nigkg of the active ingredient Chicks which consumed the medicated diets had more p005 gain compared to chicks which consumed the basal diet However streptomycin caused more p005 gain compared to tylosin Antibiotics had no effect on feed intake The chicks that consumed the antibiotics had heavier p005 weights of edible inedible organs and small intestine but lower weights of large intestine and cecum The digestibility of dry mattercrude protein and nitrogen free extract increased p005 in chicks fed with the medicated diets compared to the chicks fed with the basal diet It is concluded that antibiotic supplementation had a positive effect on chicks performance and digestibility COMPARISON AND EVALUATION OF AWASSI LAMBS FATTENING SYSTEMS IN PALESTINE.http://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/COMPARISON-----AND----EVALUATION----OF----AWASSI----LAMBS-FATTENING-SYSTEMS-IN-PALESTINEPublished ArticlesThis research was conducted to investigate the performance of Awassi lambs in the two fattening systems in Palestine Both systems are based in specific locations in the country with variable outcomes A total of sixty Awassi lambs were used in the experiment Lambs were divided into two groups of thirty lambs in each Lambs in the first group were fed a concentrate ration similar to those fed in commercial fattening operations Lambs in the second group were fed a barley-based diet 70 barley plus 30 legume roughage Lambs were fed their rations for 70 days Lambs were weighed at weekly basis At day 42 of beginning of the feeding trial a digestibility trial was conducted on eight of each group A six days total collection of feed feces and urine was performed The performance of lambs fed the commercial fattening rations was much belter than lambs fed the barley based rations This was observed from the performance parameters such as the total gain average daily gain 278 vs 146 g and the feed conversion efficiencies Lambs fed the commercial fattening rations had average feed efficiency of 55 kg while that of lambs the barley based rations was 88 kg The cost of gain was significantly P005 higher in lambs fed the barley-based diets The digestion trials showed that the dry matter and nutrients digestibility were higher for the commercial fattening rations compared to barley based rations Utilization of Olive Pulp in Broiler Rationshttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Utilization-of-Olive-Pulp-in-Broiler-RationsPublished ArticlesThis research was conducted to study the effects of different levels of olive pulp on body weight gain feed intake and feed conversion efficiency of broiler chicks A total of 160 day-old chicks were used in this research and were divided into five experimental groups with four replicates in each Olive pulp was incorporated in four of the experimental groups at rates of 25 5 75 and 10 in both starter and finisher feeds to replace similar rates of yellow corn Chicks were fed these diets during the entire feeding trial which lasted for 35 days Weight gain of chicks was the same in chicks consuming up to 75 of olive pulp However weight gain of chicks fed the level of 10 olive pulp had the lowest significant p005 weight gain Similar trends were observed in chicks for feed intake and feed conversion efficiency The research showed that olive pulp could be considered as potential low cost feed for broilers FEED INDUSTRY IN PALESTINEhttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/FEED-INDUSTRY-IN-PALESTINEPublished ArticlesThere are sixteen feed mills in Palestine with a total capacity of about 25000 tons per month as well as three others under construction with a total capacity of 5500 tons monthly However despite the expansion in feed milling Israeli feed-mills still dominate the local market This study aimed to examine the reasons for this and the potential of the local feed industry in the context of open regional trade Palestinian feed mills vary considerably in their production capacity and in the type of machinery used In many cases however il is observed that feed mills purchased used machinery procured from the Israeli factories This may have important consequences for the productivity of these mills and their cost structure as well as the quality of manufactured feed Owners of local feed mills rationalize this by pointing to their very limited financial resources and the small size of the domestic markets Another important point in this context is that local feed mills import all their raw materials from foreign sources but their storage capacity is noticeably limited around 9000 tons again on account of their weak financial base This has added to their production cost and severely under minded competitiveness vis-a-vis Israeli manufacturers The aggregate demand for various types of livestock feed as of early 1999 is estimated at 25000 tons per month 17000 tones for the West Dank and 8000 tons for the Gaza Strip In addition the consumption of barley is estimated at about 8000 tons per month Local feed mills currently produce about I 1000 tons per month which accounts for only 25 of poultry feed and 55 of other livestock feedThis study examined the reasons for the low share of local feed mills and came up with the following factors1 Several factories produce only mash feed whereas the demand is stronger for feed in pellets and crumbled forms Much factories arc unable to buy the machinery needed for this purpose2 There is a wide spread belief that local feed is of fluctuating and generally inferior qualityespecially in comparison with Israeli feed3 Credit facilities provided by the Israeli firms arc much more relaxed than those available in local factories The study demonstrated the need to introduce major improvements in the local feed industry in an effort to improve its competitive standingSome quality characteristics of eggs marketed in North of West Bank (Palestine)http://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Some-quality-characteristics-of-eggs-marketed-in-North-of-West-Bank-PalestinePublished ArticlesA total of 720 eggs were purchased from three different places : supermarkets public markets and broiler selling shops were examined for shell cleanliness Haugh unit yolk color and shell thickness Price per kg egg mass was also calculated for the three different consumer channels mentioned above Source of eggs found to have a significant effect on egg weight Hugh unit and price per kg egg mass Eggs obtained from super markets had significantly P 005 the lowest weight the highest P 001 percentage of weight class small and pewee1 and stained checked eggs Similarly eggs from super markets had the lowest interior quality However these eggs were of more shell thickness and the more prices per egg mass unit Most of the eggs tested were of grade AA in regard to the interior quality However eggs obtained from the broiler selling shops had the highest percentages of the jumbo and the extra large grades Incidence of Fasciolosis in Cattlehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/rateb-2276/article/Incidence-of-Fasciolosis-in-CattlePublished ArticlesThe purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of the spread of facilities in cattle slaughtered in Palestine All cattle entered Nablus central slaughterhouse were examined for the disease Focal and liver animals for diagnosis of the disease Fecal samples were subjected to sedimentation while liver samples were anatomically tested by a hand lens The study showed that heifers had the highest rate P005 of infection during spring while male calves had the highest infections P 005 during autumn Adult cows suffered from the disease at highest rates P 005 during winter and spring The study showed the incidence of the disease in cattle slaughtered al local slaughter houses especially in adult cows during winter and spring seasons
