microtuberization of Cyclamen persicum Mill were studied using seedling tissues Tuber leaf and petiole sections of aseptic seedlings of cultivar Concerto were established on Murashige and Skoog MS basal medium Three levels of benzyladenine BA 44 88 133 M and four levels of thidiazuron TDZ 05 1 2 4 M were used with the three different explants All regeneration media were supplied with 54 M naphthalene acetic acid NAA No shoot regeneration was observed in media without cytokinins The greatest percent shoot regeneration 100 was obtained from tuber sections cultured on media supplemented with 44 M BA and 4 M TDZ No regeneration was obtained with petiole sections Microtubers were formed with leaf explant The higher microtuberization response was obtained with leaf explants cultured on media supplemented with 2 and 4 M TDZ 416 and 583 respectively Tuberous structures microtubers were able to sprout and leaves continued to grow on these structures After an acclimatization period the plantlets were transferred to the greenhouse and continued their growth normally An-Najah University Journal for Research - Natural Sciences A ISSN: 1727-2114 Volume 18 Issue 2 2004 Pages: Bank-Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/hassan2230/article/Optimal-Nitrogen-Fertilization-for-Potatoes-in-the-West-Bank-PalestinePublished ArticlesA study was conducted in Tubas district in a field located in Wadi Al-Fara The area is under irrigation and rich with ground water Fara basin Potatoe crop was selected as it is one of the most important irrigated crops in the area Spunta cultivar was used Two experiments were conducted The first was conducted to determine the most suitable type of nitrogen source and the second experiment was conducted to determine the optimal nitrogen fertilization for potatoes It was found that the type and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer added to potatoes plants affected both crop quantity and quality The vegetative dry weight was increased when nitrogen fertilizers were used In addition the use of both urea and ammonium sulfate increases potato yield Mixing the organic acid fertilizer with ammonium sulfate or urea also increased the production insignificantly It was found that increasing the amount of nitrogen increases the number of tubers size hardness and the density of the tuber A quadratic significant relation was found between the yield and the amount of nitrogen fertilizer A maximum yield of potato under the experimental conditions was obtained with 35kgdunum nitrogen rate as ammonium sulfate Yield at this rate was 4016kgdunum Nitrate residue in the root zone at the end of the season has increased significantly when more than 20kg nitrogendunum was added When organic acid fertilizer was mixed with ammonium sulfate the nitrate was increased in the soil profile and the salt leaching was also minimized An-Najah University Journal for Research - Natural Sciences A ISSN: 1727-2114 Volume 16 Issue 2 2002 Graftinghttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/hassan2230/article/Performance-of-Different-Grape-Cultivars-for-Rooting-and-GraftingPublished ArticlesFour local grape cultivars Halawani Beiruiti Zaini and Beituni were bench grafted on four different grape rootstocks B41 Paulsen Rugerri and Richter Two grafting methods were used: whip tongue and wedge grafting The experiment was conducted for two successive seasons 1997 and 1998 All rootstock basis were treated with Indolebutyric- acid IBA at 8000 ppm in the form of powder The results showed a great variability in the rooting ability of the different rootstocks with Paulsen rootstock which resulted in the higher rooting ability while Rugerri and B41 resulted significantly in the lower rooting percentage in both seasons The scion as well as the grafting method did not affect the rooting ability of the rootstocks The rootstock scion combination showed high healing ability with a significant interaction between both graft partners Rugerri and Richter resulted in the highest healing of grafts The vegetative bud growth of the graft varied among the different scion cultivars but without any significant effect of grafting method or rootstocks in both seasons Both Halawani and Beiruiti resulted in the higher vegetative growth during propagationThe Response of Three Varieties of Wheat to Nitrogen Fertilizationhttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/hassan2230/article/The-Response-of-Three-Varieties-of-Wheat-to-Nitrogen-FertilizationPublished ArticlesThe effects of different levels of nitrogen fertilization 0 2 4 8 and 16 kg N dunum on the production of three wheat varieties 780 Lakeesh and Anbar were studied The experiment was conducted for two successive seasons 1994 and 1995 In the second season 1995 a higher nitrogen fertilization rate 16 kg N dunum and a third variety Anbar were added The different levels of nitrogen fertilization were arranged in a Completely Randomized Design for each variety The results showed positive response of the three varieties to the nitrogen fertilization Nitrogen fertilization increased significantly the total yield and the straw weight in variety 780 and the grain weight for lakeesh variety in the first season In the second season there was a significant quadratic relation between the nitrogen fertilization and the total grain and straw weight in variety 780 and the total and grain weight for lackeesh however for Anbar variety a significant quadratic relation was only shown between the nitrogen application and straw weight There was no significant effect of nitrogen fertilization on grain size or the level of nitrogen and protein in the grains Using the yield-fertilizer application relations obtained in the experiment it was found that the optimal nitrogen fertilization which gave the highest optimal return were 57 126 and 95 kg dunum for the three varieties lakeesh 780 and Anbar subsequently The optimal amount of fertilization wasnt highly influenced with 20 changes in pricesIn Vitro Culture and Microtuberization of Spunta Potato (Solanum tuberosum of date palm in Palestinehttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/hassan2230/article/Status-of-date-palm-in-PalestinePublished ArticlesPalestine has a Mediterranean climate which is characterized by long hot dry summers and short cool rainy winters The total area of the West Bank is about 6 million donums 1 donum = 01 hectare of which 30 is cultivated while the total area of the Gaza Strip is 365000 donums of which 55 is cultivated Date palm is cultivated in a small area in the West Bank about 500 donums in Jericho and 2200 donums in Gaza The total annual production of date palm in those areas is 3000 tons This amount is about 10 of the dates consumed in the West Bank and Gaza Most of the date palms planted in Jericho are grown from seeds and called Baladi These trees produce different fruit sizes and colours with high genetic diversity Some of these trees are also old more than 50 years therefore their ability to produce offshoots has been reduced New cultivars which have been established in the area Medjool Barhee and Deglet Nour proved to grow well under Jericho conditions In Gaza 90 of date trees are of Hayani variety while the rest 10 are of other varieties Among the difficulties facing date palm culture in Jericho and Gaza are : i the limited amount of water available for agriculture; i fertilization and pollination problems; iii the lack of genetic diversity especially in Gaza; v the lack of good propagation systems; and v the lack of comprehensive planning for the agricultural sector in Gaza and JerichoThe Effect of Different Seed Treatments on Seed Germination of Gundelia tournefortii Seedshttp://blogs.najah.edu/staff/hassan2230/article/The-Effect-of-Different-Seed-Treatments-on-Seed-Germination-of-Gundelia-tournefortii-SeedsPublished ArticlesThe effects of different seed treatments on the germination percentage and rate of Gundelia tournefortii seeds were studied Seeds were collected from Jamaeen area near Nablus city The normal healthy seeds were separated from small shrinked seed and used in the different trails Three experiments were conducted in which the effect of presoaking scarification and stratification on the seed germination was investigated The higher germination percentage 48 was obtained when the outer seed coat was removed after the seeds were presoaked in water This percentage was highly significant than other results obtained with the other treatments The use of concentrated sulfuric acid for 15 and 30 minutes to tender the seed coat didnt increase the germination percentage of the treated seeds over that of the control Similar effects was also exhibited when the seeds were soaked in hot water for different intervals Cold stratification at 4-5 didnt significantly increase the germination percentage of the seeds
